President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides announced that the country plans to officially join the Schengen area in 2026. Cyprus will complete all technical procedures by the end of 2025, and political support from the European Parliament has already been received. However, the final entry depends on the fulfillment of all conditions and approval from the current participants of the Schengen Agreement.
The Schengen area unites 29 European states with no internal border controls between them. After joining the zone, Cyprus citizens will have the right to travel to these countries without having to present their passport at the borders. This will simplify both tourist trips and business travel throughout Europe.
Advantages of joining:
Cyprus has been an EU member state since 2004 and switched to the euro in 2008. Geographically, the country occupies a strategically important position at the intersection of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The island is famous for its stable economy, low taxes, developed financial sector and high quality of life. Cyprus is also actively involved in the development of the region's natural resources, including natural gas production in the eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus previously offered a program for obtaining citizenship through investment, known as the "golden passport". This scheme allowed foreigners to become citizens of Cyprus by investing in real estate or the country's economy. The program was closed in 2020 after criticism from the European Union, but investor interest in the country remained.
Currently, an alternative option is in effect — a residence permit for investment. It allows you to obtain the right to live in Cyprus when investing in real estate from a certain amount. With the planned entry into Schengen, this type of residency will become even more attractive, as it will provide access to the entire Schengen area without additional visas.
Cyprus's accession to the Schengen Area is an important step in the country's development as a full member of the European community. This will expand the rights of citizens, simplify travel and make the country even more attractive for investment. As a tourist destination, as a financial center, and as an entry point to Europe, Cyprus enjoys a significant advantage in the international arena.
