Switzerland, known for its political stability, high standard of living and favorable investment climate, remains one of the most attractive destinations for wealthy foreigners. One of the ways to legally settle in the country is the lump-sum taxation tax regime, intended for citizens of other states who do not work in the Confederation.

According to the latest data from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), by the end of 2022, 496 people lived in Switzerland who used this scheme. This is 22% more than in 2021.

The largest proportion of participants are Russian citizens — they cover about 20% of all those who have received status under this system. Then there are the citizens China and the United Kingdom (10% each), as well as the United States (8%).

The lump-sum taxation tax model allows wealthy individuals to obtain a residence permit subject to payment of a fixed tax, the amount of which is determined at the cantonal level. In the canton of Bern, for example, the minimum annual tax is 500,000 Swiss francs. This condition replaces the need to declare real incomes, which makes the system especially attractive for international entrepreneurs and show business stars.

Among the famous owners of this status is the British musician Robbie Williams, who moved with his family to the Alpine town of Gstaad in 2023. His choice fell on a 400-square-meter chalet, which includes six bedrooms and all the amenities for a comfortable life in the mountains.

In addition to Switzerland, similar tax regimes operate in a number of other European countries, including Italy, Portugal and Malta, which makes them attractive to financially independent people seeking stability and a high quality of life.

Switzerland, despite its compact territory and lack of access to the sea, occupies a leading position in terms of the well-being of citizens, the quality of medical services and the education system. The country is famous for its neutrality, developed banking system and status as one of the global financial centers.
