According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, citizens of the Russian Federation are required to notify government authorities of obtaining a residence permit in another country. This is especially true for permanent residence permit, however, in practice, some Russian courts may not distinguish between temporary and permanent residence permit abroad.

The deadline for submitting a residence permit notice is no later than 60 calendar days from the date of its receipt.

Ways to notify about a residence permit:

  • On the territory of Russia — through bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the place of registration;
  • Abroad — through consulates and consular departments of embassies of the Russian Federation.

It should be noted that citizens of the Russian Federation are not required to notify Russian authorities about this while outside the country. However, after returning to Russia, the notification becomes mandatory.

Liability for violation of notification deadlines:

  • Fine up to 1,000 rubles — in case of late submission;
  • In case of complete absence of notification, criminal punishment is possible: a fine of up to 200,000 rubles or compulsory labor.
