University abroad for students from Russia: where to study in 2023

Recent geopolitical events have changed much, and not just for Russia. But Russia's isolation is not as complete as it might seem at first glance. At least, not much has changed for Russian graduates wishing to study abroad.

Popularity of Foreign Universities

Borders are open for students, although there are exceptions. However, UNESCO statistics show that interest among Russian applicants in foreign universities has declined compared to pre-COVID years. In 2019, the number of Russian students at foreign universities exceeded 79,000. And in 2022, 57,591 people went abroad to study.

However, companies that assist applicants note a growing interest among those who consider studying abroad as an opportunity for relocation.

The list of the most popular countries for higher education included Germany, the Czech Republic, the USA, the UK, and France. However, in 2023, the Czech Republic dropped from the list, as it stopped issuing student visas to candidates from Russia. However, Hungary may well take its place.
